We found Dutch wandering on the side of the road and he was in major pain. His right leg was swollen and at first we thought he'd been hit by a car. After calming him down a bit and working to gain his trust, we could see he had a small spot of blood on the top of his paw. Then, it was clear that Dutch had been bitten by a snake.
We have a lot of rattlesnakes in our part of Texas, so that is what we thought had bit Dutch. That would have been very, very bad. We coaxed him into the truck with some beef jerky and drove him straight to our vet Jon. Jon said he thought it was more likely a bite from a copperhead and was able to treat Dutch.
We took this picture and the kids made some posters. I have to say I wasn't too optimistic, but the very next day, Dutch's owners called. They were just sick about losing their dog, and drove to Salado right away to pick him up. They even paid the vet bill - this may be a first! We are so happy Dutch was found, that we could help, and that he has such a wonderful family! Dutch is now back on his feet and feeling much better.
